On 29 November 2026, Switzerland votes on the popular initiative «For a restriction of fireworks». Here are the key facts at a glance.
What does the initiative text say?
The initiative wants to ban the sale and use of fireworks that make noise. The text leaves open exactly which fireworks would be covered. According to the initiative committee, low-noise products such as sparklers and conventional fountains should remain allowed.
What would it mean for 1 August and New Year's Eve?
The cantons could approve exceptions for events of supra-regional importance – such as the National Day or public festivals. But private individuals would no longer be allowed to set off noise-producing fireworks, even then.
The family fireworks in the garden, the rocket at midnight, the cake with friends: that's exactly what would disappear.
What do the Federal Council and Parliament say?
The Federal Council and Parliament recommend rejecting the initiative. Their reasons:
- The initiative goes too far.
- For many, fireworks are part of the celebrations on 1 August and New Year's Eve.
- The impact is limited to a few days a year.
- Use is already strictly regulated – cantons and municipalities can restrict fireworks further.
According to the No committee, the National Council rejected the initiative by 131 to 50 votes with 18 abstentions, the Council of States by 40 to 3 votes with one abstention.
Our position
We're voting no on 29 November. Not because we don't care about consideration – quite the opposite: we advise every customer, inform about safety and take back used fireworks. Respect, not bans.
